❌ Not allowed: Entry via Shanghai, exit via Guangzhou (different regions)
Key restriction: You must enter and exit through ports in the same administrative region unless specifically allowed (e.g., Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei is one region).
Application Process
- At your origin airport: Inform airline you’re using 144-hour visa-free transit
- On arrival in China: Proceed to “144-hour Visa-Free Transit” counter (separate from regular immigration)
- Documents required: Passport, boarding pass for onward flight, completed arrival card
- Processing time: 5–15 minutes (significantly faster than visa-on-arrival queues)
Pro tip: Have your hotel booking and return flight details ready (sometimes requested).
Movement Restrictions
You may travel freely within the designated region but cannot leave it without a full visa. For example:
- Beijing transit → can visit Tianjin, parts of Hebei
- Shanghai transit → can visit Suzhou, Hangzhou (both in Jiangsu/Zhejiang)
- Guangzhou transit → can visit Shenzhen, Zhuhai
Leaving the region = violation → fines, deportation, future visa difficulties.
